Every year, hundreds of millions of blood tests are ordered worldwide. They are the single most common medical investigation a doctor can request. Yet the majority of people who receive their results walk away confused — or simply don't look at them at all.
This guide explains every major blood test panel in plain language. You do not need a medical background to understand it.
The Complete Blood Count (CBC)
The CBC is the most frequently ordered blood test. It measures the three types of cells in your blood: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
Red Blood Cells (RBC) and Haemoglobin
Red blood cells carry oxygen from your lungs to every organ in your body. Haemoglobin is the protein inside each red blood cell that actually holds the oxygen.
- Normal haemoglobin: 13.5–17.5 g/dL for men, 12.0–15.5 g/dL for women
- Low haemoglobin (anaemia): You may feel tired, short of breath, or look pale. Common causes include iron deficiency, B12 deficiency, or blood loss.
- High haemoglobin: Can indicate dehydration, smoking, or rarely a blood disorder.
White Blood Cells (WBC)
White blood cells are your immune system. They fight infection and respond to inflammation.
- Normal WBC: 4,500–11,000 cells per microlitre
- High WBC: Usually means infection, inflammation, or stress on the body. Very high counts can rarely indicate leukaemia.
- Low WBC: Can result from viral infections, certain medications, or autoimmune conditions.
Platelets
Platelets are tiny cells that clump together to stop bleeding when you have a cut or injury.
- Normal platelets: 150,000–400,000 per microlitre
- Low platelets: You may bruise or bleed more easily than normal.
- High platelets: May indicate inflammation, iron deficiency, or a bone marrow condition.
The Metabolic Panel
The basic or comprehensive metabolic panel checks how well your organs — particularly your kidneys and liver — are functioning, and measures key minerals in your blood.
Glucose
Blood glucose measures your blood sugar level at the time the blood was drawn. Fasting glucose (taken after not eating for 8 hours) is more meaningful than a random sample.
- Normal fasting glucose: 70–99 mg/dL (3.9–5.5 mmol/L)
- Pre-diabetes: 100–125 mg/dL
- Diabetes: 126 mg/dL or above on two separate tests
Kidney Function: Creatinine and eGFR
Creatinine is a waste product your muscles produce constantly. Healthy kidneys filter it out efficiently. High creatinine suggests your kidneys are not filtering as well as they should be.
eGFR (estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate) is calculated from your creatinine and tells you what percentage of kidney function you have. Above 60 is generally considered normal.
Liver Enzymes: ALT and AST
ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase) and AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase) are enzymes found mostly in liver cells. When liver cells are damaged or inflamed, these enzymes leak into the bloodstream, raising their level in your test.
- Mildly elevated ALT/AST: Can be caused by fatty liver, certain medications (including statins), or alcohol.
- Significantly elevated: May indicate hepatitis, liver injury, or other conditions requiring investigation.
Thyroid Function: TSH
TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) is the most important thyroid test. It measures how hard your pituitary gland is working to stimulate your thyroid.
- Normal TSH: 0.4–4.0 mIU/L (range varies slightly by lab)
- High TSH: Your thyroid is underactive (hypothyroidism). Symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, feeling cold.
- Low TSH: Your thyroid is overactive (hyperthyroidism). Symptoms include weight loss, rapid heartbeat, anxiety.
What the Reference Ranges Actually Mean
Every lab report includes a "reference range" next to each result. These ranges are calculated from a large population of healthy people — typically the middle 95%. This means that 5% of perfectly healthy people will fall outside the reference range on any given day.
A single result slightly outside the reference range is not a diagnosis. Context matters enormously: your age, sex, medications, time of day, whether you fasted, and your personal baseline all affect interpretation. Always discuss results with your doctor before drawing conclusions.
